I think I have glue in my left nostril

Well, it took me hours and hours to create four scrapbook pages, but at the risk of sounding like a complete dork, it was a lot of fun. I've always enjoyed working with my hands, and nothing fits the bill like taking a bunch of pieces and making a unique keepsake out of them.

Sure, I don't see myself having time to tie 15 tiny pieces of pink thread around keyhole stickers once the baby is born, but it really is a major stress reliever that I can lose myself in. (Almost more so than writing because it's not a cognitive thing -- I just sort of zone out.) Plus, it's the perfect way to put my design skills and artistic ability to work. Frankly, I can't believe I didn't start scrapbooking sooner.

I know the true test will be not letting it pile up and doing a few pages right after a big event like the first bath, a holiday or just an awesome picture of Jerry with spit up on his sleeve. Because if I let it go too long, I'm apt to feel overwhelmed and not know where to begin again.

Part of my inspiration for following through with it -- at least for the first year -- is a book my mom kept that documents her pregnancy and my infancy. I still love flipping through it to this day, and in between the last page and the back binder is a pile of childhood mementos like my first attempt at wielding a crayon.

I can only hope my daughter will take pleasure in her own book someday.

This is the book that I bought. I used a magazine photo for
inspiration until I have an actual picture of our baby to put in there.

P1011622
I should've taken an "after" table photo. This is tame.

P1011635
20 weeks ultrasound photo page.

P1011633
The top reads, "My Top 10 Cravings" and I listed them on the
plate and made all of the food cutouts to the right by hand. I traced
an actual plate, knife and fork to help me with the place setting.
I didn't have any silver paper, so I used foil. I think it worked.

Such beautiful 1st pages of the book. You are so artistic! I would've never thought to put your top ten cravings on there. You're creative Kelly. Makes me wish my mom did one for me. Ah, well if I ever do have children ::cough cough:: which I doubt, I'll certainly make a scrapbook myself. It makes life more special that way, knowing that you have a book dedicated about you, which someone who loved you made.

Take care, Kelly.

I just read that you are expecting...I am soooo happy for you! I wish you still posted regularly on Xanga....I miss you and I forget to come here to update. I wish you were not so busy so that you could copy and paste everything to Xanga and I could enjoy you more. I guess I will have to stop being so lazy myself and visit you more often now especially since with a baby comming......I know you are going to keep in me in stitches laughing. I have birth 5 children myself so I know all the ends and outs of the maternity wards now. Make them save you something to eat since you starve until the baby gets there. While at the time you will not care.....afterwards......you will want something.....anything! I am so HAPPY FOR YOU!!!! mundanejane from xanga.

this just made me realllly sad. Sure it might be because i didn't get a scrapbook from my parents. Because, well, i'm the second born. okay okay fine. My older sister didn't gwet one either (my parents weren't creative at all) BUT STILL she still recieved more attention. I just want to be sure that if you guys do have a second kid..... do everything for him/her also. Even if it isn't as exciting as the first time around

Leslie said...

Aww (I just read the second child comment). But I guess I kind of agree, since it's so much harder to find childhood photos of me than my big brother.

:)

I can't wait till the baby is here! Are there names you guys have in mind?

That is adorable. Seriously, keep the motivation and keep a scrapbook thru the baby and early years. My mom kept one for me and it has EVERYTHING in there from kindergarten drawings to awards won to random crap i would leave on the kitchen table that they thought was cute. It's now one of my most valued possessions. There's so much I would have forgotten if it wasn't in there. You are going to be such a great mother, I just know it! And have you been thinking about names yet? I saw you should let all your readers vote and go with what we pick. HA! That could be interesting. Have a good one!

Living in Europe, I'm amazed at the phenomenon that is Scrapbooking! It is non existent over here. Yours looks really nice and as you've said, it'll be a great keepsake. Just one thing, not that it matters (at least in a Scrapbook) but the fork and knife should actually be switched. An actual place setting always has the fork on the left and the knife on the right.

the scrapbook looks wonderful - something you and your daughter will always cherish! Let us know as you complete more pages...

P.S. I am sorry about my comment yesterday; it was meant to be lighthearted (as obviosuly there is no such thing as a "bet poll"). Unfortunately there is no delete... I'll be more careful!

Looks good! I bet it will come in hand when you're further along and feel less like being out and about. Then you can just stay home and scrapbook. Can't wait to see more.

I LOVE your pages! You did so good, especially for a first timer. I especially love your cravings pages - how original! I finally started my wedding scrapbook - we will only be married for 2 years next month :)

Bahaha! I love Meghan's comment: "I'm hiring you to be crafty for me someday."

Those are very cute pages. Can't wait to see more.

Oh, they are wonderful! Don't let it pile up though, like you said. I have roughly 100,000 (no exaggeration there, either) photos of me from the time I was born until now. It's hard work getting through all of that. I've only got the first year covered and I've been scrapbooking for two years. It has become daunting. You know what's easiest to do? Make the pages ahead of time. Anticipate what king of page you're going to need i.e. bath, first smile, start walking, Christmas, birthday etc, etc, etc, etc and then make the page. You can easily stick the photos in at a later date. Anyway, nice pages and good luck with keeping the book up.

Ahhh nesting! I can't wait to have enough exciting stuff going on in my life that it might justify a scrapbook. I love to look through my baby book (there are very few pictures of my mom being pregnant) and my junior high/high school scrap book!

Marsha said...

Yeah, hate to disappoint you, you so will not be having time to do that after the baby.
At least not if you are the dedicated mom I know you will be LOL.
Or unless you are younger and more energetic than I am, which is totally true.
Cute pages, though. I hate to admit that I can't even keep up w/digital scrapbooking or memory books.

Wow, that looks fantastic!!

Oh my god. Let me just second what Meghan said.... damn you, you scrapbooking godess, homedecorating guru, inspired writer, and adorable pregnant lady! I can't even match color's most of the time. Woe unto me.

That is so awesome already! I love it. And I'm sure your daughter will too.

Marina said...

You are awesome. And of COURSE she will love flipping through it when she's older. Everyone loves learning stuff like that about themselves. :)

Those books are a good idea, Mom kept most of her items in a old trunk\suitcase, plus a few other spots that I have consolidated. Gonna sell it all on eBay or to the tabloids when I get famous, then I'll be RICH and famous! LOL (so far, no-one to pass it on too!)

I also love to scrapbook. It's relaxing to just lose yourself in it, and at the end you have a beautiful keepsake. I wish my mom would have made a "baby-book" for me, I've never even seen a belly-shot or anything. ;) So I think your little girl will be so grateful.

Ah! btw, I forgot to mention- that darn scrapbooking can get EXPENSIVE, man. Best to do it your own crafty-way rather than hit up one of those scrapbooking mega stores that you find in the stripmalls of suburbs. Those places have every imagineable type of paper, stickers, iron-ons, adhesives, mementos, whatever... I could go crazy there.

You are too damn cute.

Those are seriously adorable! I absolutely love scrapbooking and putting creative juices to work! It's wonderful and having it just to flip through in the future will be amazing. She will love it!!

It looks wonderful! Your little girl will definitely love being able to look back at her scrapbook, and it'll be something for her to cherish. Great job! As everyone else has said, you're so crafty! I'm extremely jealous.

From a fellow scrapbooker, I'm so proud! What a great start!

I think if you keep some basic supplies on hand and get into a style you like that you can replicate quickly you should be fine keeping it updated. I have a box next to my scrapbooking stuff that is my catch all for tickets, extra photos, maps and all sorts of stuff so it is all in one place when I'm ready to scrapbook.

Good luck!

Best wishes, Kelly - I'm really happy for you and Jerry (and Toby - lol).
